Up to 80'c is acceptable for GTX970 but try to keep it below 70'C. I OC my Galax/KFA2 GTX970 EXOC to +225 Core with +500 Mem and the temperature never exceeded 70'C on full load (70% max fan speed, 26'C room temperature) with 40'C on idle. This is the idle temperature most likely. I do not think you read the temperature correctly, there is noway an OCed GTX970 can go 42'C on full load.

Will I do damage to my card by doing this? I have had no problems running the card at near full load for several hours (Games like Crysis 3). I have overclocked my card to 1500mhz before and overclocked the memory to 8ghz (+500mhz). Also my statement's above are based upon the assumption that you have a blower style GTX 970. If you really wanted to overclock properly you will need proper heatsinks on the memory too. Your GPU has the most entry level PCB and component quality. You don't understand, overclocking definitely will be difficult if you have poor cooling on the core, however overclocking has mostly got to do with the quality of the PCB, quality of the voltage controller, quality of these other power regulators and other components. The FTW+ would do so much better overclocking in every aspect. +500 Mhz on the core is most likely impossible. I have heard that the memory chips dont need significant cooling, so would an overclock of +500 mhz add much heat? I dont see how its not an 'overclocking cooler', my temperatures dropped from 80C to 42C with this cooler.
